The Department of Microbiology, Virology and Infection Control
provides a wide range of routine and specialist investigations in
Bacteriology, Virology and PCR required for the diagnosis and
management of patients.
Our expert team in Microbiology provides a
24/7 service for the prevention, investigation and control of
healthcare-associated infection in patients and staff.
The department is highly research active, specialising
in development of molecular diagnostics in both virology
and bacteriology. Routine testing includes:
-16S broad range sequencing (Bacterial)
-18S broad range sequencing (Fungal)
- Real-time PCR for: Group A Streptococcus
Streptococcus pneumoniae
Enterobacteriacae
Mycobacterium species (TB and NTM)
Staphlococcus aureus
Neisseria meningitidis
Kingella kingae
Whipples (Tropheryma whipplei)

8am - 4.30pm (Monday - Saturday)
Virology:
9am - 5.30pm (Monday -
Friday)
Infection Control: 8am -
6pm (Monday - Friday)
Out of hours
Microbiology:
Emergency 24hr service (seven days)
Virology:
Saturday 9am - 1pm
